ING Developer Portal

The ING Developer Portal is the starting point for companies that want to link ING APIs. During this project we improved the user experience of the portal and we implemented the new ING brand style consistently. We determined the pain points through various usability tests, surveys and user interviews.

Goal

Improve usability and visual design

Timeline

August 2020 - October 2021

Background

Since the introduction of the new PSD2 payment guidelines, banks have been obliged to give third parties access to “their” data. External developers and ING exchange data via APIs. An API is an interface that allows multiple software applications to communicate with each other. The ING Developer Platform is the central place where developers can find all the (technical) information about ING APIs.

Findings

The navigation structure and registration flow were the biggest pain points. Developers are digitally well versed, they recognize UX patterns and are able to quickly navigate through funnels. First of all, as a result of various card sorting sessions, we established a new navigation structure. After that we improved pages and funnels. The number of screens turned out to be too high for the tech-savvy target group, so we started shortening texts and reducing the number of funnel steps.

Solution

Clear navigation structure

A clear navigation structure so that the target group can easily and quickly achieve their goal.

Design in a new look

An improved visual design that matches the ING Brand. With photography that fits the target group.

New features

An improved registration flow with new features such as 'creating a team' and 'two factor authentication.
